Technology Adoption in Schools

Currently, I am not a classroom teacher. Nevertheless, I believe that the biggest barriers in technology adoption are lack of finances and knowledge. It is difficult for many school systems to fund these advancements in technology. As regards to implementing technology in the classroom, I am sure teachers have to be creative and really think outside the box.  When I student taught in 2001, there were no computers in the classroom. Therefore, incorporating computer assignments in my lessons (in-class) was not an option. It is also important to consider the teachers who are not computer savvy and refuse to learn how to properly utilize and incorporate computers as a component in their teaching and learning environment.  It is vital that we continue to learn and grow with our students.

  1. Hi Alicia,

Hampton?? I went to high school in Williamsburg for three years and finished in Chesapeake. I understand your thoughts about their being a lack of funding. Being in a school for nearly ten years now I personally think that there is more a misappropriation of funding than a lack there of. In my current position I have 5 superintendents over me each having a full staff to “support” them. Talk about to many chiefs…. In addition there are people in charge of things that often don’t use common sense in making decisions that cost money. Just this week, my department head (science) spent nine thousand dollars on TI calculators for SOL testing. The math department has an abundance of calculators. We cannot use math’s calculators because guidance scheduled math and science to test on the same two days. Math, understandably, wants their students for their own students. A simple change of (what are flexible, days would prevent science from having to spend 9K on calculators instead of other much needed technology. I was in industry for several years and everything was about efficiency. Seems education is the opposite.

    Be Blessed,
    Alan

  3. Hello Alicia,
I love your background! I bet it suits your personality perfectly.
    Nice job all around.

I agree with you that there are still too many teachers who do not seem to understand the need to integrate technology into their instructional practices. The fact that there are so many classrooms that look the same as they did 15 years ago is unfair to the students. I still hope for the day when schools adapt to the needs of the students rather than the students having to adapt to the needs of the school.
